JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. Engineering Supervisor specifically for the Biomedical Engineering department, supervises a team that supports patient diagnosis and treatment by installing, testing, calibrating, and repairing biomedical equipment to ensure that all machines and equipment meets the safety standards and that it is safe for actual patient use. S/He is responsible for training end-users, and Biomedical Technologists, maintaining safe operations of these machines and equipment. S/He consistently updates their knowledge and training by studying service manuals and attending technical training sessions; also, s/he provides technical guidance in the operation and care of equipment to medical personnel and ensures safety and compliance with regulations. S/He plans and implements professional development of his team members and conducts performance appraisal. Additionally, s/he maintains records on equipment maintenance, repairs and updates and inspects equipment on a regular basis. S/He also communicates these maintenance concerns to the immediate superior and the end users accordingly.

Planning and Organizing
- Participates in identifying department’s goals and objectives within the various areas of service offered and makes sure that these targets are met accurately and in a timely manner. Sample tasks:

Setting of KRA’s per position - Supervises biomedical technology team in implementing biomedical technology programs across the organization. Ensures that it is timely and efficient based on the department and hospital standards; Receives service requests and assigns the appropriate biomedical technologist to resolve the concern.
- Prepares the regular work and on-call schedules.
- Supervises all product demos, installation and warranty maintenance of new equipment, and preventive maintenance of vendors and biomedical technologists. Ensures that the quality performance, safety, and efficiency requirements of the Biomedical Technology Standards are met.
- Ensure that all maintenance procedures are based on manufacturer’s checklists or from Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI) checklist if not available. Ensures that electrical safety tests in accordance with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62353 or 61010 are complied with as necessary and sure that all equipment ar e accurately assessed if safe for actual patient use.
- Ensures that biomedical technologists observe safety protocols in their respective area of assignment at all times by wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), decontaminates equipment, utilizes correct tools, observes electrical safety protocols and coordinates with the safety team regarding any safety issues.
- Ensures the inventory and status monitoring of all biomedical equipment in the hospital and ensures the accuracy of inventory and in database and in hard file.
Analysis and Recommendations
- Prepares and analyses pertinent data as required by his/her immediate superior or the management.
- Recommends changes and updates in processes, policies, procedures, or standards in the department to improve quality of service. Sample tasks:

Process Review
Policy-Making - Regularly checks the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website for medical device recalls and updates the biomedical team’s database. Recommends or initiates appropriate action upon validation of the status of affected machine or equipment.
- Informs the appropriate department leader or end-user on medical device recall.
- Provides assessment and recommendations to the management on assets that are beyond economical repair (BER). Provides guidance to the end-users or the department on proper procedures when equipment is decommissioned.
- Research on best practices in the biomedical maintenance industry and shares or recommends these to the immediate superior or the management.
- Recommends solutions to make cost effective repairs, minimize downtime, efficient and fast response, and improved work standards and proper management of vendors to the immediate superior.
- Updates the immediate superior on any biomedical equipment related, safety, or performance related concerns on a regular basis and recommends appropriate action.
- Participates in the continuous quality improvement of service, safety procedures and activities.
Continuous Quality Improvement
- Recommends, participates, and Ensures implementation of processes and policies to continuously improve the quality of service in the department.
- Leads or directs the team or creates functional team to identify performance gaps and formulate strategic interventions to continuously improve on identified areas for improvement, when required
- Assists in the development and placement of safety strategies and continuous quality improvement of service initiatives in the department.
- Mentors and/or trains the junior members of the unit to ensure proper cascading and/or learning of technical know-how and soft skills that contribute to the achievement of the unit’s objectives.
Team Development
- Oversees the daily operations of the area/section to ensure efficient and effective management of services;

- Plans, develops, implements, and facilitates the timely follow through of the technical training and professional enhancement of direct reports; ensures that they are able to gain the technical knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently perform their duties in order to gain career progression within CHH.
- Ensures that newly hired Biomed personnel are mentored during their probationary period in the following areas:
Proper operation of the equipment;
Technical repair of equipment including corrective & preventive maintenance;
Others
