Chong Hua Hospital Empowers Clinicians with Critical Care Ultrasound Workshop

Chong Hua Hospital held a two-day postgraduate course designed to bring ultrasound directly to the patient’s bedside. Titled “BETTER CARE AT THE BEDSIDE: THE POWER OF CRITICAL CARE ULTRASOUND,” the program gathered passionate healthcare professionals committed to improving patient outcomes through real-time, evidence-based practice. It took place on November 15–16 at the 12th Floor Auditorium, Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue, and featured expert-led lectures, live demonstrations, and immersive, hands-on sessions that showed how ultrasound works in real clinical settings.

The course introduced Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for use in critical care. It focused on the heart, lungs, and kidneys, building the core skills needed to evaluate critically ill patients at the bedside and to identify important problems early—even in high-pressure situations. The program was structured to help participants build a strong foundation in point-of-care or handheld ultrasound—skills they can continue to refine in daily practice to support better care and outcomes in emergency and critical care.

Key learning areas included getting to know the ultrasound machine and its settings (knobology), obtaining basic cardiac echocardiographic views and recognizing signs of heart dysfunction such as cardiogenic shock, performing lung ultrasound to identify pneumonia, pleural effusion, and pneumothorax, and learning the VEXUS protocol to assess venous congestion and evaluate kidney function, especially in acute kidney injury or when checking a patient’s fluid status.

This initiative reflects Chong Hua Hospital’s ongoing commitment to continuous improvement in patient care, ensuring that clinicians are equipped with up-to-date, evidence-based skills to deliver safe, timely, and effective treatment at the bedside.
