Instructions and Preparations

The following instructions must be strictly followed in order to get accurate test results. Should there be any questions, please do not hesitate to ask our Coordinator

  1. Eat a Low Fat supper at around 7:00 P.M. the night before the examination. Low Fat diet may consist of clear soup or broth, baked/steamed/boiled fish, meat, vegetables, and non-fried rice.
  2. After your supper, DO NOT eat anything, but take 1 glass of water, until the time you are advised to eat when the tests requiring 12 hours fasting are already done.
    However, medications may be taken as usual with a small amount of water.
  3. The following tests will require 12 hours fasting:
    • Blood Chemistry
    • Proctoscopy
    • Ultrasound of the Abdomen
  4. Preparation of proctoscopy of the abdomen are as follows:
    1. Afternoon before the day of schedule:
      • Take 4 tablets of Bisacodyl (e.g. Dulcolax) at 4:00 P.M.
    2. Evening before the day of schedule:
      • Take 4 tablets of Bisacodyl (e.g. Dulcolax) at 8:00 P.M.
    3. Morning of scheduled check-up:
      • Insert 2 Bisacodyl (e.g. Dulcolax) suppositories (into the rectum) at 5:00 A.M.
    4. Try to empty your bowel completely prior to your schedule
      • Take 4 tablets of Bisacodyl (e.g. Dulcolax) at 4:00 P.M.
  5. Collect stool specimen as follows (specimen containers will be provided in the ECU lounge the day before the check-up):
    1. Avoiding contact with urine, pass stool directly into the stool cup or pass stool into the large clean container. Transfer entire specimen into the stool cup using a plastic spoon or a popsicle stick.
    2. Label the stool cup with your FULL NAME, BIRTHDATE, DATE and TIME of collection.
    3. Submit the specimen to the lab WITHIN AN HOUR OF COLLECTION.
    4. For OCCULT BLOOD determination, you should do the following for three days prior to date of stool sample collection:
      • Abstain from red meat, animal blood and internal organs in the diet
      • Temporarily stop iron supplement
      • Refrain from peroxidase-containing fruits and vegetables (radish, turnips, cabbage, beets, banana)
  1. Collect clean catch midstream urine as follows (specimen containers will be provided in the ECU lounge the day before the check-up):
    1. Cleanse yourself with towelettes.
    2. Urinate a small amount into toilet.
    3. Place the collection cup under the stream of urine and continue to urinate into a specimen cup. Once the collection cup is full, finish urinating into the toilet
    4. Replace the lid of the cup, and tighten the lid security. Label the urine cup with your FULL NAME, BIRTHDATE, DATE and TIME of collection.
    5. Submit the specimen to the laboratory WITHIN AN HOUR OF COLLECTION.
  2. For 24-Hour Creatinine Clearance:
    1. Prepare three pieces of clean 1-liter water bottles and place a label on each bottle to include NAME, BIRTHDATE, DATE, and TIME of start of urine collection.
    2. Void first urine sample and discard, then start timing for 24 hours.
    3. All urine voided thereafter must be collected completely, and placed inside the prepared clean water bottles, taking care not to spill the urine. A clean plastic funnel may be used for this purpose.
    4. Consecutive urine samples collected maybe added to the previous samples in the same bottle. Cover bottles tightly. Keep refrigerated.
    5. A blood sample for plasma creatinine is extracted at the 12th-hour of the urine collection. This is important in the computation of the 24-hour creatinine clearance formula.
    6. Submit all urine collected for 24-hours.
    7. Keep the bottles cool, ideally placed on ice during transport to the laboratory.
  3. For Treadmill Stress Test, prepare the following things on the day of the check-up:
    • Jogging or loose pants
    • Loose blouse or T-shirt with front opening
    • Sneakers and socks
    • Towel
  4. Please bring your reading glasses if you have one. These are needed for complete ophthalmologic (eye) examinations.
  5. For convenience and comfort of female patients, it is ideal to have the check-up when you do not have your monthly period.
